The move came days after he threw his hat into the ring, along with 56 other applicants who applied for the top job.

Though he has no prior coaching experience, Kumble has been a mentor for Mumbai Indians as well as Royal Challengers Bangalore in Indian Premier League.

Kumble made his Test debut vs England in 1990.

Kumble has 639 Test wickets to his name in Tests and he also picked 337 ODI wickets.

Kumble is the third-highest wicket taker in the history of Test cricket.

Not to forget, Kumble also has a Test century to his name.

Kumble is the only bowler after England's Jim Laker to have claimed all ten wickets in a Test innings.
