Melbourne: Sri Lanka beat Australia by 9 runs and qualified for the finals of the CB series. They will again face Australia in the finals.
Here are the details of how the entire match panned out:
50th Over: Sri Lanka win!! India out of the CB Series!
David Hussey got out off the 1st ball of the 50th Over. Sri Lanka won by 9 runs and qualified for the finals of the CB Series along with Australia.
49th Over: Malinga removed Xavier Doherty off the 2nd ball of the over. Australia needed 13 runs from 10 balls with just 1 wicket remaining.
48th Over: Australia were 225/8. They need 14 from 12 balls.
45th Over: Diavid Hussey was fighting a lone battle here. He reached 50 while Australia crossed 200. After 45 overs, Australia were 205/8. They need 34 off 30 balls!
43th Over: Clint McKay run out!!
Sri Lanka almost made it to the finals of the CB seriers as Australia were 187/8 after 43th over.
41st Over: Pattinson Out!
Pattinson became the 7th Australian batsman to get out. Australia were looking down the barrel at 178/7.
Over 33.5: Daniel Christian departs!!
Stunning catch by Senanayake off his own bowling saw off Christian, who contributed just three to the scoresheet at the time of departure. Australia 151/6 after 34 overs.
31st Over: Shane Watson OUT!!
A yorker length ball from Malinga uprooted Shane Watson`s middle stump. He scored 65 runs from 83 balls.
22nd Over: Australia reached 100-run mark. Hussey and Watson put up a vital stand to stage an Australian fightback. Watson also scored his fifty off 61 balls.
5th Over: Australia lost another wicket. Malinga struck again and removed in-form Peter Forrest for 2. Australia were struggling at 26/3.
4th Over: Matthew Wade went early too as he was sent to the pavillion by Kulasekara for 9.
3rd Over: Australia lost their first wicket. Malinga removed David Warner for 6.
Lankan Innings: As It Happened:
50th Over: Sri Lanka were bowled out for 238. Daniel Christian took 5 wickets.
47th Over: Lankans scored 13 runs off this over bowled by Pattinson. Sri Lanka 227/8.
43.5 Over: Its a hat-trick for Daniel Christian! He is rewarded for some wicket to wicket bowling. The ball swung in after pitching and hit the pads of new batsman Kulasekara who tried to flick the ball. It looked like the ball was moving oustide the leg-stump. Christian is surrounded by jubiliant Australian cricketers.
43.4 Over: Daniel Christian is on a hat-trick! Senanayake moved across his crease and was caught plumb in front of the wicket!
43.3 Over: In order to accelerate the runs, Perera too lost his wicket as he tried to clear the boundary. He was caught on the deep midwicket boundary by Michael Hussey who took a brilliant catch off the bowling of Daniel Christian.
42nd Over: Angelo Mathews did not last long as he departed for 5. Doharty took a brilliant catch running back off Daniel Christian. Sri Lanka 198/5 after 42nd over.
39th Over: Pattinson continued to impress as he removed Dinesh Chandiman for 75. Chandimal’s 84-ball knock consisted of 3 fours and 2 sixes.
33th Over: Sri Lanka reached 150-run mark with Chandimal going great guns.
29th Over: After giving Sri Lanka a solid platform, Kumar Sangakkara played a rash shot only to be caught at square-leg boundary for a well-made 64 off 93 balls. Pattinson took the wicket.
26th Over: Dinesh Chandimal slammed an attractive fifty off just 46 balls. He hit 2 fours and 2 sixes.
22nd Over: Sri Lanka reached 100-run mark in the 22nd over of the match.
16th Over: Kumar Sangakkara and Dinesh Chandimal were doing the repair job for Sri Lanka after the loss of two wickets early on. After 16th over, Sri Lanka were 63/2.
5th Over: James Pattinson struck for Australia as he removed dangerous-looking Dilshan for 9. It was a beautiful ball from Pattinson which kissed the outside-edge of Dilashan’s bat on his way to stumper Matthew Wade.
2nd Over: Sri Lanka lost first wicket as skipper Mahela Jayawardene was run out trying to take an impossible single. Jayawardene made only 5. Sri Lanka were 11/1 after the end of 2nd over.
1st Over: Comeback paceman James Pattinson started proceedings for the Australia. For Sri Lanka, Dilshan and Jayawardene started from where they left off, taking 6 run in the very first over.
Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to bat first against Australia in an important match of CB Series at Melbourne.
Sri Lanka needed to win this match to qualify for the finals. If Australia, who have already qualified for the finals, beat Sri Lanka, India would then make it to the finals. For a change, the entire India would be rooting for an Australian win.
Farveez Maharoof was injured and was replaced by the offspinner Sachitra Senanayake in the Sri Lankan final XI.
Australia also made a change in their side. Fast bowler James Pattinson got a game in place of injured Brett Lee.
