Canada captain blame batsmen for loss against Pakistan
Colombo: Canada had a great chance to create the second upset of the World Cup but they floundered with the bat yet again and captain Ashish Bagai was candid enough to admit that his batters were not good enough to cross the 184 run target set by Pakistan in a group A match here on Thursday.
Sent into field, Canada bowlers produced a spirited display to bowl out mighty Pakistan for 184. But their batters came up with a listless performance to be bundled out for 138, thereby handing the 1992 champions a 46-run victory.
“It is a very very disappointing loss for us. We did a good job with the ball and in the field but our batting woes continued,” a seemingly upset Bagai said after the match.
“We had a really good chance to register a win. Fighting is one thing but getting over the line is another. Our batting has been a bit of worry for us not only in this game but in the last two games as well,” he said.
Captain Shahid Afridi, who scripted the win for Pakistan with figures of five for 23 from his 10 overs, cautioned his batsmen and said they can’t afford to repeat the same mistakes in the upcoming matches.
“It was a great performance but it was not good shot selection from our batsmen. It is a wake call for us,” he said.
“I hope we won’t repeat the same batting performance again. We needed partnerships and that was missing,” Afridi added.
He, however, lauded his bowlers for making up for the batter’s dismal outing.
“Our bowlers are doing very well and we are all confident.”
Speaking about his own bowling in the tournament, Afridi, who was adjudged the man-of-the-match said, “The conditions are perfect for spinners. If you bowl well in the right areas you are bound to get wickets.”
