Uttar Pradesh end the day at 292/6. They lead by 57 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Delhi bowled very well in the last session. Raina batting on 19* off 70 balls has been very patient and has curbed his natural instincts considering wickets were tumbling at the other end. The last session fetched 47 runs for the Uttar Pradesh team.
Update 16: Another wicket for Delhi. Arish Alam goes for 1 taking Sumit Narwal’s tally of wickets to 3. UP are starting to lose their way and Delhi are clawing back into this match. UP are now 268/5.
Update 15: Parvinder Singh departs for 20. Narwal adds another wicket to his tally. UP are now 266/4 with a lead of 31 runs. The wicket will put further responsibility on Raina who is batting on 3*.
Update 14: Post tea session: UP have reached 260/3, and lead by 25 runs. Parvinder Singh is batting on 14* and Suresh Raina is on 3*. It will be interesting to see how Raina approaches the innings. Is he going to play his natural aggressive game or is he going to mould himself into the test player that his team needs him to be? Well Raina’s innings will definitely have a big influence on his future as a Test match player.
Tea Report Delhi took a couple of wickets in the post lunch session but not before Uttar Pradesh had taken the important first innings lead.
At tea, UP were 245/3, with a lead of 10 runs with 7 wickets in hand.
However, the highlight of the post lunch session was the compact century by young opener Mukul Dagar who got out on the stroke of tea after playing a classy innings. His 116 came off 214-balls and was laced with 14 fours.
He looked to be a fine promising player with a cool head on his shoulder. He was compact and played some attractive shots. His backfoot cover drives were a treat to the eyes.
Meanwhile, Kaif, who played very well for his 91, missed a well-deserved century when Vikas Misra got him half an hour before tea.
Kaif and Dagar combined together to put on a superb 196-run stand which helped UP to attain the first innings lead.
Update 13: UP go into tea at 245/3 with a lead of 10 runs. Although they are in a comfortable position they would have preferred to have at least one of their set batsmen at the crease. The last session is going to be an exciting one with two comparatively new batsmen going up against the Delhi attack.
Update 12: Mukul Dagar has been bowled by Sumit Narwal! The left hander falls for 116 off 214 balls with 14 fours. Two set batsmen dismissed in quick succession and Delhi have a chance of making a comeback. UP are 239/3.
Update 11: And against the run of play Delhi manage a wicket and a big one at that. Md. Kaif misses his century and is dismissed by slow left armer Vikas Mishra for 91 off 175balls with 11 fours and a six. A brilliant partnership of 196 between Kaif and Dagar comes to an end, UP are now 232/2.
Update 10: UP are 216/1 in reply to Delhi's 235 all out. Dagar is going strong after completing his century and is batting at 103* and Kaif is at 81* fast approaching a century.
Update 9: Left handed UP opener Mukul Dagar scores his maiden 1st class ton off 167 balls with 13 fours. UP are comfortably placed at 203/1. Dagar has impressed one and all with his stroke play.
Update 8:172/1 in 52 overs. Kaif is batting on 71* and Dagar on 73*. UP start the post lunch session on a positive note. Both batsmen look very comfortable in the middle and are scoring runs at will.
Mohammad Kaif and Mukul Dagar scored fine fifties as Uttar Pradesh took the upper hand in the Ranji Trophy group B match against Delhi.
At lunch, UP were 152/1 with Kaif and Dagar, unbeaten on 64 and 61, respectively. They look all set to give UP a first innings lead.
Their 136-run stand has been the main attraction of the morning session in which Delhi failed to take a single wicket.
India discard Kaif was the more attractive of the two. Despite getting hit by a scorching Ishant Sharma bouncer early in the day, the gutsy middle order batsman, didn't backtrack but took the attack to the opposition. He hooked Ashish Nehra over square leg for a six to show that he was in mood to get bogged down. From then on he scored all round the wicket showing glimpses of the time when he was an integral part of the Indian middle order.
With a few places up for grabs in the Indian middle order, a big innings from Kaif will most definitely put him in contention for the Indian Test team.
Opener Mukul Dagar also played a good innings. He looked assured against the pacers and played some attractive shots through the off side. He lent much needed support to Kaif in a bid to achieve a healthy first innings lead over Delhi.
Though Ishant Sharma looked penetrative in the morning, other bowlers were negotiated very well by both the batsmen.
Update 7: UP go into lunch at 152/1 in 46 ovrs. Kaif at 64* and Dagar at 61* have looked rock solid in the middle. UP have scored 112 runs in the morning session and now trail by 83 runs with 9 wickets remaining.
Update 6: UP: 135/1 after 41 overs. They look all set for a huge first innings lead.
Update 5: Kaif gets to his 50 with 6 boundaries and a six. He’s playing superbly.Elegant cover drives, one hook for a six backed by solid defence. Hope the selectors are watching!
Update 4: UP: 148/1. Looking all set to take the first innings lead.
Update 3: UP: 93/1 after 27 overs. Kaif is batting on 35* and Dagar on 32*. The partnership is looking good.
Update 2: UP: 77/1 after 24 overs. Kaif 27*, Dagar 24*
Update 1: UP start on a positive note. But Ishant is bowling with a lot of fire.50 up for UP. Hits kaif`s helmet with a bouncer.
Day 1 summary: A star studded Delhi could only manage 235 runs in their first innings. Imtiaz Ahmed was the pick of the bowlers with 5 wickets. At the end of Day 1, UP were 40/1 with Mukul Dagar and Mohammad Kaif at the crease.
