Chennai: England skipper Alastair Cook on Friday became the youngest batsman to complete 11, 000 runs in Test cricket. Cook, who needed two runs to achieve the feat, did so off the first ball on the opening day of the fifth Test match against India at MA Chidambaram Stadium.

It was a special achievement for Cook, who is the youngest (31y 257d) and has taken the least time from debut (10y 290d) to reach 11, 000 Test runs.

One of the finest batsmen of his generation, the left-handed batsman has scored 10998 runs from 139 Tests at an impressive average of 46.60.

Cook hasn't been in the best of form in the ongoing series against India, where he has scored 310 runs from eight innings. Barring the century he hit in the first Test at Rajkot, the 31-year-old has failed to lead from the front.

Speculations are rife that he will step down as captain after the final Test and he recently said that Joe Root was all set to lead England.
