India vs England, 2nd Test, Day 3 — As it happened...

INDIA 2ND INNINGS

STUMPS! Day 3 - IND 98/3 (Kohli 56, Rahane 22) - After a Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane shake-off early blues to stabilize Indian innings by putting a partnership of 58 runs. For once, the hosts looked highly troubled and uncomfortable facing Engalnd bowlers, who didn't let any batsmen settle until the captain-vice captain duo decided to take matter in their own hands.

It will be important for India to handle England carefully in the morning session on Day 4. A target of 400 - 450 would give Indian spinners a platform to exploit the wicket with ease.

OVER 32 | SCORE 89/3 (Kohli 50, Rahane 20)

50 for the Indian skipper. Virat Kohli continues his impressive form in 2nd innings too, just need Ajinkya Rahane to continue support from the other end.

OVER 25 | SCORE 72/3 (Kohli 36, Rahane 16)

Ajinkya Rahane seems to have got his sync and rhythm back but India will rue losing 3 wickets enroute 25 overs.

OVER 20 | SCORE 52/3 (Kohli 29, Rahane 4)

Kohli-Rahane survived a misunderstanding while running between the wickets, which could have been costly to India. Indian players look a little nervy facing English bowlers but they are hanging on a the moment.

OVER 17 | SCORE 44/3 (Kohli 21, Rahane 0)

Trouble times for India to lose thre wickets so early in the 2nd innings. Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane on crease will be looking to build this partnership into a strong one.

CA Pujara b Anderson 1 (24b)

KL Rahul c Bairstow b Broad 10 (31b)

OVER 10 | SCORE 17/1 (Rahul 10, Pujara 0)

Murali Vijay falls to Sutart Broad on 9th over of the match. Initially given not-out by on-field umpire Rod Tucker, England took review and Vijay was given out after a bat-pad was caught by Joe Root. Cheteshwar Pujara walks in early once again.

M Vijay c Root b Broad 3 (25b)

It's TEA and India are 8/0 after 6 overs.

OVER 5 | SCORE 7/0 (Vijay 2, Rahul 1)

Cautious approach by the Indians as they look to avoid early setback just like the 1st innings where Kohli and Pujara had to come out to bat so early.

ENGLAND 1ST INNINGS

OVER 102.5 | SCORE 255/10 (Rashid 32)

England bowled out for 255, exactly 200 runs less than India's total of 455. As per rules, India can enforce follow on on Alastair Cook and Co. but Virat Kohli decides against going with the idea. India will come out to bat shortly

JM Anderson lbw b Ashwin 0 (1b)

SCJ Broad lbw b Ashwin 13 (26b)

OVER 95.1 | SCORE 234/8 (Rashid 24)

Two more shocks to England, Ben Stokes and Zafar Ansari depart as Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja picking up the wickets respectively.

ZS Ansari lbw b Jadeja 4 (9b)

BA Stokes lbw b Ashwin 70 (157b)

OVER 90 | SCORE 224/6 (Stokes 70, Rashid 18)

90 overs gone, Stokes-Rashid thwart early trouble to start building a decent partnership. Ashwin brought back into the attack as Virat looks to break the partnership.

OVER 81 | SCORE 191/6 (Stokes 55, Rashid 1)

1 wicket in the session for India as the game halts for LUNCH. The second session is typically easier for the batting side but Virat Kohli will be looking to bring R Ashwin brack into the attack to remove the unsettled Adil Rashin cheaply.

OVER 79 | SCORE 190/6 (Stokes 55, Rashid 0)

What a terrific delivery from Umesh Yadav to clean bowled Jonny Bairstow, who departs after completing his century. Ben Stokes still on crease having completed his fifty too. Adil Rashin joins in.

JM Bairstow b UT Yadav 53 (152b)

OVER 71 | SCORE 175/5 (Bairtstow 44, Stokes 49)

Both Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow cruising towards their respective half-centuries. Kohli brings in Jayant Yadav to partner Ravindra Jadeja as India strive to pick wickets.

OVER 65 | SCORE 158/5 (Bairtstow 39, Stokes 37)

Baistow, Stokes going strong, have put up a partnership of 78 runs already. All eyes on Shami-Ashwin to provide India the breakthrough here.

OVER 59 | SCORE 137/5 (Bairtstow 29, Stokes 28)

For now, the pitch is behaving very well from the batsman's perspective. Bairstow-Stokes look a lot more settled. Remains to be seen if Virat Kohli will bring in Mohammed Shami shortly.

OVER 55 | SCORE 125/5 (Bairtstow 24, Stokes 21)

R Ashwin, who was brought straight into the attack leaving English batsmen bamboozled, constantly beating them with spin variations. Ashwin also took India's first review of the on his very first ball. It didn't go in India's favour though.

OVER 50 | SCORE 106/5 (Bairtstow 15, Stokes 12)

Jonyy Bairstow brushes off unexpected injury scare and starts off the match along with Ben Stokes.

09:33 AM IST: Play is underway with Umesh Yadav beginning India's proceedings with the ball.

09:25 AM IST: We are moments away from starting off 3rd Day's action at Vizag.

What to expect on Day 3:

India, having tasted blood on the second day, will push for a win. But that to happen, Virat Kohli & Co will need to produce a clinical first session on Saturday. The skipper, in fact, has got the means to achieve that target.

R Ashwin was imperious on Friday so thus other bowlers. Debutant Jayant Yadav will be eager for more wickets, so thus Ravindra Jadeja, who is still without a wicket. Pacers Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav should be motivated enough to clean up the English tail, in case the spinners failed.

For England, they have a mountain to climb, as they say. Ben Stokes is capable of playing an long innings, so thus Jonny Bairstow. But for English batsmen, surviving against a hungry Indian attack in India means forgetting everything, and just staying put. Whatever it takes.

India are likely to bat for the second time to set a daunting target, just to assure themselves a win. But chances of enforcing a follow-on can't be ruled out, if England batsmen conspired against themselves.

Day 2 recap:

Indian spinners roared back to form to leave England reeling at 103 for five in their first innings as the hosts strengthened their position in the second Test.

The spinners showed what they can do on a pitch offering help and were led by the in-form Ashwin, who picked up the key wicket of Joe Root (53) and Ben Duckett (5) after scoring a crucial half century earlier in the day.

For England, Ben Stokes and Bairstow were in the middle at close of play on day two with their team still trailing by 352 runs.

India, starting the day at 317/4, added 138 runs to post 455 with overnight centurion Kohli going on to make 167 besides Ashwin (58) and debutant Yadav (35) making valuable contributions.
