New Delhi: India captain Virat Kohli ended up giving away five penalty runs to England during first day's play of the fifth and final Test in Chennai on Friday.

It happened during the 24th over of the England first innings, with local boy Ravichandran Ashwin bowling to Joe Root. Off the third ball, Root missed the line of the ball, and an inside-edge managed to beat wicket-keeper Parthiv Patel.

The skipper, certainly not bemused by his own action, which many would say unnecessary, tried hiding the disappointment with a wry smile. It certainly was one blemish his team can take from the skipper who hasn't taken a wrong step for some time.

England, fighting to salvage some pride after losing the series, have produced a brilliant day of Test cricket with Moeen Ali registering his second hundred of the series. He was brilliantly supported by Root, who made 88 off 144 balls.

At Stumps, England were 284/4 with Ali unbeaten on 120 off 222 balls, and Ben Stokes at 5 off 29.

For India, Ravindra Jadeja took three wicket after just-married Ishant Sharma provided India the first wicket.
