Indian bowler Mohammed Shami undergoes doping test in Australia

New Delhi: Indian pace bowler Mohammed Shami on Friday underwent a doping test in Melbourne. The International Cricket Council will conduct random testing of players during the quadrennial tournament Down Under.

In a bid to streamline cricket's anti-doping policy with those of other sports', the ICC became a signatory of World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) in July 2006. Since then, cricket's world governing body has announced it's will to take part in the global fight against drugs.

The ICC has its stated goals like (a) maintain the integrity of the sport of cricket, (b) protect the health and rights of all participants in the sport of cricket, and (c) keep the sport of cricket free from doping.

In an infamous incident, Australian spin legend Shane Warne was evicted from the 2003 World Cup after testing positive for a banned substance in South Africa. In the run-up to 2007 World Cup, Pakistani pace-dou Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif  were axed for the ICC Champions Trophy following positive tests for banned steroid nandrolone. Both the bolwers were subsequently withdrawn from the Pakitan World Cup squad.

Shami's test result will be available later. He played in India's win over arch-rival Pakistan in Adelaide on February 15. India will take on South Africa on Sunday in their second match of the 2015 ICC World Cup.
