New Delhi: Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Monday named captain of the new Indian Premier League he was picked up for at the Indian Premier League draft.

The Sanjeev Goenka-owned franchise will be called Rising Pune Supergiants (RPSG).

Unveiling the team logo and captain, Goenka said: “I welcome Dhoni as the captain of Rising Pune Supergiants for the 2016 season.

“He has always been a phenomenal leader for teams that he has represented including the Indian side. His track record in both domestic and International arenas have been remarkable. I firmly believe he will lead our team extremely well on and off the field,” he further added.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Ajinkya Rahane, Steven Smith and Faf du Plessis were the other four players picked during the draft by the Pune team.

2016 edition of the IPL will be the first time Dhoni will play for a team other than the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

CSK, currently suspended for two years, will be back in the league in 2018.
