Wankhede Stadium (Mumbai)

Mumbai, widely regarded as India's cricket capital, is home to the Wankhede Stadium, one of the most iconic grounds in the country. A dispute between Cricket Club of India and BCA led to the construction of this stadium.

The first Test at this venue was hosted in 1974-75 when West Indies played India. The Wankhede stadium has been witness to some of the greatest cricketing performances. Ravi Shastri hit six sixes in an over to record the fastest double-hundred in first-class cricket 1984-85 here. Sunil Gavaskar (205) and Vinod Kambli (224) slammed double tons on this very ground.

Though strokeplayers enjoy batting on the Wankhede surface, the location of the stadium near the sea has meant swing bowlers tend to get help as well. During Tests, spinners have come into play on Day 3 and 4 of the match, generating a great deal of spin and unpredictable bounce.

The two ends of the stadium are called Garware Pavilion End, Tata End. The Wankhede stadium has stands named after Mumbai cricketers like Vijay Merchant, Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.

Two gates of the stadium are named after Polly Umrigar and Vinoo Mankad. The players’ dressing room is known as Vijay Manjrekar Dressing Room.

Mumbai Indians play their home matches at the Wankhede Stadium in the IPL.
