Lahore: Pakistan`s exciting young opener, Ahmad Shehzad, just about missed out on selection for the upcoming Asia Cup, courtesy his poor disciplinary track record.
Chief selector Iqbal Qasim said after announcing the team that Shahzad and Mohammad Sami, who had both performed outstandingly well in the Bangladesh Premier League, were discussed during the meeting.
"It is not as if they were not discussed but we just felt they need more time to make a comeback," he said.
But a source, aware of the happenings in the national selection committee, said that Shahzad, who top scored in the BPL, was a strong contender but majority of the selectors felt he first needed to be counselled and reformed.
"Majority felt that he has a disciplinary issue and this was visible even in the BPL when he was fined for misconduct. The feeling was that he is an outstanding talent but someone needs to talk to him and provide him proper counseling to improve his behaviour," the source said.
The selectors eventually picked Nasir Jamshed who did pretty well in the BPL for Chittagong Kings.
He said Sami`s name was also discussed but the feeling was that he should be considered for future Test matches.
Interestingly although Australian Dav Whatmore is yet to be officially announced as head coach, his views were sought by the selectors on the squad for the Asia Cup.
"Whatmore is not yet formally appointed coach but the selectors still took his feedback and he adopted a safe stance. He also needed time to watch the players up close in the Asia Cup."
The source said the selectors were unanimous over axing former captain Shoaib Malik and opener Imran Farhat.
"No one supported their inclusion in the Asia Cup squad. While wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal was axed because the selectors felt there was a need for a wicketkeeper who was also a proven batsman in the late order."
