Kolkata, May 24: Krishna Chattopadhyay, a prolific singer and one of the pioneers of Bengali kabyageeti, has passed away due to prolonged illness in New Delhi, family sources said. She was 74 and breathed her last at a nursing home yesterday in south Delhi where she was admitted ten days ago.
Chattopadhyay is survived by two sons, Anandajit Roy and Bikramjit Roy. She was an exponent of the songs penned by Bengali maestros - Atul Prasad, Dwijendralal Roy, Rajanikanta and Rabindranath Tagore. However, a massive heart attack robbed her melodious voice in 2001. Born on October 1, 1935 Chattopadhyay was initiated into the world of music by her father Harendranath Chattopadhyay, himself a renowned singer. Harendranath, who was an exponent of Atul Prasad songs, taught his daughter. Later Krishna learnt the songs of Dwijendralal Roy from the maestro`s son Dilip Kumar Roy. In Delhi, she was staying with her younger son Bikramjit. Bureau Report
