New Delhi: In a heartbreaking incident, a young cricketer lost his life in police firing on Tuesday afternoon in Kashmir's Handwara.

According to a report on NDTV, Nayeem Bhat was passing by when a mob was hurling stones at an army post.

The mob was provoked after it was alleged that a soldier had molested a schoolgirl.

The 19-year-old stopped in his tracks to take a picture of this incident on his phone.

After a few hours, the news of Nayeem's death was informed to his brother who works for a local news agency.

The youngster was part of Kashmir Gymkhana club as a top order batsman.

Having won trophies as 'Emerging Player of the Year' and 'Man of the Series', people in local cricketing circles believe Nayeem had a bright future ahead of him.

"It is unbelievable. I can't imagine he is not here. He had played in my club for five years. He was opening with me...it is extremely difficult for all of us," Mansoor Banday, the captain of Nayeem's team, told NDTV.

Nayeem was the first player from Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara region to make the cut for a national under-19 camp three years ago.

In one of the many pictures being circulated on social media, Nayeem can be seen with his idol Parvez Rasool as well.
