56th Subroto Cup begins, Bengal school wins in tournament opener

Jatragachi Pranabananda High School, from 24 Parganas in Bengal, made a bright beginning to their campaign in the 56th Subroto Cup Football Tournament with a 4-0 drubbing of Farook Higher Secondary School, Kerala in an Under-14 match at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday.

New Delhi: Jatragachi Pranabananda High School, from 24 Parganas in Bengal, made a bright beginning to their campaign in the 56th Subroto Cup Football Tournament with a 4-0 drubbing of Farook Higher Secondary School, Kerala in an Under-14 match at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Friday.

Both the Bengal and Kerala schools began cautiously in the Pool A match before picking up speed towards midway. However, the star players of the day turned out to be Bengal captain Dipankar Ghosh and Imran Hassan, both scoring two goals apiece to the win.

Maharashtra and Lakshadweep schools lock horns in Pool A matches at the New Wellington ground tomorrow.

Only one team from each pool will qualify for the knockout phase.

Just before the match, the participating teams took part in the march past during the opening ceremony which was graced by Air Marshal B B P Sinha.

After a cultural programme, Air Marshal Sinha kicked a ball to mark the beginning of the 56th edition of the tournament.
