Rio de Janeiro: Ronaldo has slammed the Brazil national team and says they are at their "worst moment in history".
The former Selecao striker believes there is a long, hard struggle ahead if Luiz Felipe Scolari`s team want to re-establish themselves as major contenders for global competitions and acknowledged the transitional phase currently facing them. "Brazil are going though an inter-harvest period, it is time to recycle," he said in an interview. "We do have young talent, one of them being Neymar who was among the 23 finalists for the Ballon d`Or, but Brazilian football is obviously far from its best at the moment. It could perhaps be the worst in history." When asked about how to change his nation`s fortunes, he answered: "We cannot forget that Spain have been doing something extraordinary, both with their national team and local football. "These are hard times for Brazilian football. We do not have star forwards in Europe that score goals. It`s time for Brazilian football to mediate about what has been going on. There is a long road ahead for us to get back to being a main player on the global stage." Ronaldo, speaking at an event for the Ballon d`Or finalists, refused to reveal his thoughts on Scolari`s appointment as Selecao boss for a second time, saying: "I am here to talk about the Ballon d`Or."
