New Delhi: Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has backed England to cause an upset at this year's European championships in France and win the elusive title.

Talking to Arsenal.com about Three Lions' chances, Wenger said "Why not?".

"Not to get out of the qualification stage, you really need to be suicidal because 16 teams out of 24 qualify and the best third go through so you don’t imagine they [England] won’t qualify," the Frenchman said.

England won the Group E in the qualifiers winning all their matches. The six-team group included Switzerland, Slovenia, Estonia, Lithuania and San Marino.

However, Wenger is not counting England as the favourites. And he reckons, it will actually helped them.

"After that, who are your main opponents? Germany, Spain and France. But I don’t rule England out, but you are not the first favourites. They are in the second tier."

In the round of 24, Roy Hodgson's side has been placed in Group B along with Russia, Slovekia and Wales.

“If things go well, they have a bunch of young players - I said the other day when we played against Bournemouth there was five British players who played: Ramsey, Chamberlain, Chambers, Gibbs and Walcott. They are all young, all talented so you cannot rule out England will do something."

England have only reached the semi-finals twice, and the quarter-finals twice in the tournament's history.

It is scheduled to be held in France from June 10 to July 10.
