Manchester United FC need to win trophy for saving season, says skipper Wayne Rooney

New Delhi: As Manchester United are into their third season in a row of not winning any silverware, skipper Wayne Rooney has claimed that the club needs to break the drought by getting a hand on some trophy this season for the fans.

"This is more or less a new team so for ourselves, as a team, we need to win something. The fans want to see us win something again,”said Rooney.

United have failed utter miserably this season under Louis van Gaal who has seen his side knocked out of the Champions League and six points behind Manchester City at fourth in the Premier League. United was also ousted of the League Cup earlier.

But there is some hope as United face Danish side FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Thursday before a trip to third-tier Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round.

The club last won a trophy under former manager Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012-13, when they romped to the Premier League title.

Saturday saw United suffer a 2-1 defeat by Sunderland and Rooney said that the important thing now is to win trophies in order to save the season.

"The important thing now, I feel, is to win trophies again this season," Rooney said.

He also added that another aim for the club is to finish within the top four in the EPL.

"Obviously the Champions League is massive for this club and it was disappointing to go out of it.

But our main aim has to be to make sure we can get in that top four."

Rooney also said the club could not afford to take the opportunity to win silverware lightly.

"It would be great if we can win (the Europa League). It`s not where we wanted to be at the start of the season but it`s where we`ve found ourselves so why not go and try to win it.”

United face Arsenal in their next EPL encounter and will hope to win their two matches in the Europa League and FA Cup prior to that.
