Forget FIFA and all the negative developments concerning football and it's administration. UEFA Champions League final is here!
Having played some enthralling football before today's summit clash, both Juventus and Barcelona deserved to be in the final of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League. Both the sides, bidding to achieve a rare continental treble, have already won their domestic doubles.
In an already impressive season for Juventus, who have successfully defended the Serie A title for the fourth successive time, they will go all out to win the continental title and will hope to give their legendary skipper Gianluigi Buffon the ultimate gift, the only trophy which has eluded the Italian shot-stopper. With an astute Massimiliano Allegri guiding them, the Old Lady believed they can beat Barcelona. And in Carlos Tevez, Alvaro Morata, Arturo Vidal and Andrea Pirlo, they have the fire-power to dismantle the Spanish favourites.
They have won the competition twice in 1985 and 1996, after playing eight times in the final.
For Barcelona, it's all about stamping their presence as possibly the best team today. Their title credentials have received a major boost since the arrival of Luis Suarez and with Lionel Messi and Neymar, he completes “the Trident”. Their upfront push will be ably supported by the likes of Andres Iniesta, Xabi Hernandez – who is playing his last Barcelona game. Under Luis Enrique, Barca have evolved as a different beast. And the former player is on the cusp of emulating Pep Guardiola's treble winning feat in the very first term as manager of the club.
Barcelona have won the competition 1991–92, 2005–06, 2008–09 and 2010–11, in seven finals.
This is the seventh time these two European powerhouses will be meeting. In their last meeting, the Italians have won 3-2 on aggregate in a 2003 Champions League quarter-final match.
Possible line-ups:
Juventus: Gianluigi Buffon; Stephan Lichtsteiner, Stephan Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli, Patrice Evra; Claudio Marchisio, Andrea Pirlo, Paul Pogba; Arturo Vidal; Carlos Tevez, Alvaro Morata.
Barcelona: Marc-Andre ter Stegen; Dani Alves, Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Jordi Alba; Ivan Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Andres Iniesta; Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Neymar.
Notable absentee will be Juventus' Giorgio Chiellini, who suffered a calf injury. And with that a certain Luis Suarez will be able to play without inhibition. But there is no injury worries for Barca.
Match officials: Cuneyt Cakir from Turkey will conduct today's match at Berlin's Olympic Stadium. His compatriots Bahattin Duran and Tarik Ongun will assist from the flanks.
