After No.1 Indiia`s below-average show in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle, ICC’s ranking system has come under huge criticism from players and former captains for being unfair, confusing and illogical.
The controversial rating puts India at number one position despite not having won a series in Australia, South Africa or Sri Lanka since a long time.
In the current Test rankings system, rating points earned or conceded are calculated based on the difference between where the teams stood before the start of the series. For example, in the ongoing series if India beat Sri Lanka, they will gain fewer points than they will concede if they lose the series. Same goes for Australia, who are facing a lower-ranked Pakistan. Even if Australia end the series 1-1, they will concede three rating points.
Many players including Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sagakkara have condemned these ratings calling it unfair. According to him, if the ratings can’t be understood by the public, players or the administrators, then there is no use of having rankings.
We at Zeecric.com want to ask our readers if they think that ICC should do away with this improper ranking system and should instead rope in a Test championship to determine the number one team. Please post your comments to let us know:
