London: Chubby Chandler has revealed that he was shocked when professional golfer Rory McIlroy announced that he had parted company with his long time manager.
During an interview, Chandler, who is on holiday with his two children in Dubai, laid bare the sense of hurt at having lost the hottest property in the sport.
“I don’t know whether it was his girlfriend world No 1 tennis player Caroline Wozniacki getting in his ear or someone else but I thought we were doing a pretty good job, to be honest, and I think that’s how the outside world saw it,” a leading daily quoted Chandler as saying.
He also made it clear that the case was not the same as it had been almost six weeks back when the two had a face-to-face with each other.
“We sat down and he said he was not happy with his brand, sponsors, website or his public relations image,” he said.
“I thought we were sorting things out to his liking. We’d just spent 10 days travelling around the world and had a fantastic time,” Chandler said.
Chandler also claimed that while on his flight to JFK in New York after the PGA grand Slam, the 22-year-old golfer turned to his then manager and asked if he could have a quite two minutes alone.
“Even though we’d had that talk six weeks ago I was shocked,’ said Chandler. ‘I had no inkling, really. Of course it batters away at your self-esteem when you lose someone like Rory, because he’s as big as they come.”
“There are financial implications, even if we’ve never done anything from a financial viewpoint. But we’ll come back from it as a company. We’ll just have to settle for finishing the year with two major champions,” he added.
