Santiago: France`s Cyril Despres won the 12th stage of the motorcycle race as part of the Yamaha team in the 2014 Dakar Rally.

Despres covered the 350-kilometre route, from Chile`s east central city of El Salvador to the northern town of La Serena, in three hours, 58 minutes and 18 seconds, reports a leading agency.

In second place was Spain`s Marc Coma (KTM team), trailing by two minutes and 17 seconds.

Coma, however, continues to be the overall leader of the motorcycle race with an almost two-hour advantage over teammate Jordi Viladoms who climbed to the second spot after Joan Barreda crashed.

Despres` win Friday put him in fourth place in the overall rankings, some four minutes behind the third place.
