Shanghai: Wet weather may offer Fernando Alonso his best chance of winning the Chinese Grand Prix this weekend but do not expect the Ferrari driver to perform a rain dance before Sunday’s race.
The Spaniard will start on the second row of the grid behind the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, a third place in qualifying this year that represented the best he could realistically manage in “normal” conditions, he said.
Rain is forecast for a third race in a row and although it would improve his chances of catching the Red Bulls, Alonso said he would still prefer it to be dry.
“Tommorow’s race will be determined by the weather,” he told reporters on Saturday. “When it rains, if it’s wet all race, just for the first part, for the middle or only at the end. We don’t know.
“In those type of races, anyone can win because there are so many differences in terms of times, if you make the right pit stop or whatever.
“If you make a wrong choice of tyres, you can lose 10 seconds a lap. That’s the problem with wet races for the teams and the championship contenders.
“It’s very nice to watch on TV but it’s risky for us.”
German Vettel gave Red Bull their first grand prix victory at a rain-swept Shanghai last year, and the Chinese Grand Prix has experienced some rain for three of the last four years.
