London: Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher has vowed to stay in the sport for at least another year in an attempt to win an eighth title.
Speculation has been rife that the 41-year-old might cut short his three-year deal with Mercedes.
“I’ll be driving for Mercedes in 2011 and my target is still another title. My aim is still what I officially publicised when I rejoined F1 – to win the title, That is my focus and that is what I am here for,” The Telegraph quoted Schumacher, as saying.
“Am I perfectly happy with my own performance? That is probably the wrong thing to say. There is an expectation out there, but you have to be realistic. To be out three years, and start where I did in a car that doesn’t allow me do it, is unrealistic.”“I will take my time. I enjoy most of it, this process. There are ups and downs and that is part of motorsport, but I am very confident I can achieve it,” he added. Schumacher had earlier written off this season as an all time career low, when he finished 15th in the European Grand Prix.
It was the 41-year-old’s worst finish in 258 races.
He heads into his home race, Sunday’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, McLaren’s trailing championship leader Lewis Hamilton by 109 points.
