New Delhi: The Commonwealth Games corruption scandal continued to get murkier on Monday as the issue of inflated prices for acquiring basic material came to the fore. According to reports, the tender for acquiring treadmills was given to a company that charged a whopping sum of 9.75 lakh for every treadmill. The fact that the costliest treadmill in the market costs just 7 lakh rupees is enough to raise eyebrows. When asked to respond to these allegations, sports minister MS Gill shirked responsibility and said that the people who were responsible for acquiring these equipment should be answerable for the alleged irregularities. Besides these, other materials such as air-conditioners have also, reportedly, been obtained at over-inflated costs. The latest revelation comes shortly after the Central Vigilance Commission’s (CVC) report that had hinted at large scale corruption in the construction of stadiums for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. Organising committee chief Suresh Kalmadi had said that the Delhi government and sports ministry was answerable for the allegations. "The report of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) on corruption charges has nothing to do with the Organising Panel. The Sports Ministry and the Delhi government have to answer the report," he had said.
