Mumbai: Mumbai`s young budding tennis player Aryan Goveas has been selected for the Indian U-14 squad to take part in the ITF 14 and Under Group 1 Tennis Championship to be held for two weeks in Manila, Philippines next month.
Goveas celebrated his inclusion with a title triumph in a senior age group as the unseeded player defeated Karnataka`s B S Rahul 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win the boys under-18 singles at the AITA Talent Series Tennis tournament at Aurangabad on February 3.
The 13-year-old also finished runner-up in the boys under-16 and in the doubles events, a media release said.
According to the records with the Maharashtra State Lawn Tennis Association, Goveas follows the footsteps of Davis Cupper Karan Rastogi in 2000 and Agnel Gladwin in 2004 to get a call up into the Indian under-14 team.
The three-member Philippines-bound Indian team also includes B R Nikshep from Karnataka and Delhi`s Alex Solanki. They will be accompanied by coach, former Davis Cupper S Narendranath. The championships, commencing on March 5, are being supported by the ITF Grand Slam Development Fund.
