OC reduces CWG volunteers from 30,000 to 22,000

Noida: The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee has reduced the number of volunteers for the sporting extravaganza from 30,000 to 22,000, saying they took the decision keeping in mind the requirement for the event.

Special Director General, Workforce CWG Organising Committee Sudhir Mittal today informed that as of now they have requirements for nearly 22,000 volunteers for the Games to be held in the Capital from October 3-14. "We had to reduce the numbers of volunteers from 30,000 to 22,000 as per our requirements," Mittal told reporters at the Amity University here, who is the official trainer for Commonwealth Games volunteers. "We are getting 2,700 cadets from NCC (National Cadet Corps) which was earlier 5000; 5,700 from Delhi University (earlier 8000); 6,00 from National Service Scheme (earlier 8000) and 1,500 from Tourism Ministry (earlier 3,500)," Mittal added. These volunteers, who have been selected from diverse field, are being trained at the Amity University by Padmashree K S Bains, who was part of the 1982 Delhi Asian Games and also led the Indian contingent at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland. Founder president of Amity Group, Ashok K Chauhan said, "We believe that Amity not only possesses the rich experience and vast resources at its disposal for such training but also the uncompromising urge to train and develop the best volunteers who would in turn decide the success of the Games." The volunteers are being imparted three days of intensive training in various aspects like medical assistance, disaster management, gender sensitivity, doping test and protocols (VVIP`s, media and athletes protocol). To meet the global standard in training, Amity University has collaborated with Europe`s Event Knowledge Services (EKS) and Knowledge System and Solutions, which possesses vast experience in training manforce for events like 2008 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Olympics and various other international multi-sporting events. "It`s a robust process and standard approach is being taken to train these volunteers. Time span is roughly similar to any other training for international sports events,"said Christian Napier, team leader of Event Knowledge Services. All the volunteers will be awarded certificates at the conclusion of the Games apart from various other benefits. PTI
