Queen`s baton relay arrives in Ghana

Accra: The Glasgow 2014 Queen`s Baton Relay has arrived in Ghana from Sierra Leone.

The baton relay is the traditional curtain raiser to the Commonwealth Games and has been a part of the Games programme since the Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games in Wales, reports Xinhua. The baton arrived Friday night at Ghana`s Kotoka International Airport on a Kenyan Airways flight from Sierra Leone, the 22nd country in its 70 Commonwealth destinations and was accompanied by officials of the Commonwealth games secretariat. Ghana`s minister of youth and sports Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah led a government delegation to welcome the Relay team at the Kotoka International Airport in Accra. The baton would be officially received by Ghana`s vice president Kwesi Amissah-Arthur at a welcoming ceremony at the Flagstaff House Saturday. The Glasgow 2014 Queen`s Baton Relay began at Buckingham Palace Oct 9 last year. As part of its journey, the baton relay will traverse the length and breadth of the Commonwealth visiting all 70 nations and regions of the Commonwealth covering 190,000 kilometres in 248 days. The baton will travel to Asia, Oceania, Africa, Americas (south), the Caribbean, Americas (North) and Europe and will then complete the final part of the journey in Scotland where it will spend a total of 40 days.
