Solanke upsets fourth seed Bartakke

Mumbai: Vishal Solanke of Parabhani shocked higher ranked rival Amardeep Bartakke in the third round of the BHEL Maharashtra State Selection FIDE Rating chess tournament organised by Rohini Khadilkar Trust here today.Solanke, playing with white on the third table, opted for an irregular opening against Mumbai`s Bartakke who adopted King`s Indian Defence, but the former carried on without doing castling and attacked on his rival`s castling with pawns and pieces to win the game in just 26 moves.

On the top board Sagar Shah of Mumbai, with white pieces, opted to play the Nimzo Indian defence against Milind Gode of Mumbai and won the game without difficulty in 34 moves at the Andheri Sports Complex. Soham Phadke of Pune, playing with black pieces, against T Chandran of Nagpur opted for Grunfeld defence. Chandran delayed his kingside development and his rival forced his king to come in the open and won in just 19 moves. Nineteen players shared the lead at the end of three rounds with 3 points each in the event conducted by the Bombay Chess Association. Bureau Report
