New Delhi: India's star boxer Vijender Singh today met Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at his residence here and discussed about his plans of developing professional boxing in the country.

Vijender also thanked the minister for his constant support in his professional debut.

"I thanked the Minister for his continuous support in my professional career. He assured me full support in my future fights as well," said Vijender after the meeting.

The Olympic bronze medallist also said that Sonowal has assured him full support in his endeavour to develop professional boxing in India.

"I also discussed with him about the plans of developing professional boxing in India. I am happy that Mr. Sonowal gave a very positive response for the development of pro boxing in our country," said Vijender.

"I believe that some boxers who are done with their amateur career should now come forward and join professional boxing, its good for their future. I am ready to support them," he added.

Vijender said that Sonowal told him that the Sports Minister was taking all necessary steps to support amateur boxers ahead of next year's Olympic Games.

"I have expressed my concern to the minister on the future of amateur boxing in India and he told me that his ministry is taking all necessary steps to support amateur boxers preparing for the Rio Olympics," Vijender said.
