Review: ‘Bride Wars’ catfight fails to appeal

For a flick that has the two most gifted actresses, Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway, ‘Bride Wars’ is a sheer waste of talent and a good plot that if handled right would have been a sure shot blockbuster. But what could have been a meaty entertainer, ended up being a sloppy, slow paced, mediocre comedy owing to its sub-standard script and sluggish direction.

So what does this one offer? Well, it has an interesting title, a star packed cast and that’s about it. Polished on the outside but a drab, cold flick with nothing new to offer if one is to go through the agony to watch this appalling picture touted in the comic genre. Forgettable to say the least, the flick revolves around two childhood chums Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway. While Kate aka Olivia is a ruthless, tough nut to crack lawyer, Hathaway aka Emma is just the opposite, portrayed as a caring, much loved and adored schoolteacher. But though their temperaments are poles apart, the one trait they have in common is their obsession to have a perfect wedding- a feeling we women can sure associate with. But the connection with the audiences is soon lost as the best friends for life turn into enemies out to pull each other down. Wonder, why? Well, your guess is as good as ours- they are both to tie the knot at the same time, thereby involved in a ugly tussle to get the best venue, dresses and cake etc for their coincidental same wedding date. What follows are sneaky acts and snooty wedding plans. Both ladies begin to plan their wedding together and meet the same wedding planner (played by Candice Bergen), whose assistant goofs-up. Incidentally, he ends up giving the two same dates and books the same venue for both their weddings. Naturally, now one has to back down. But, who? Emma, who is always so submissive, is unwilling to give up this time round. She starts playing games with Olivia by sending her cheeky messages. Olivia too refuses to back down and answers Emma in the most brutal words. Thus being the ‘Bride Wars’. Out to do each other the two best friends use their secrets to overpower one another. For such a predictable tale let the end be a mystery as that’s the only aspect one can watch this one for. Rating: 2 cheers for this one.
