Sanchez-Vicario ordered to pay income tax bill

Madrid: Former world number one Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario was ordered to pay unpaid income tax amounting to around 3.5 million euros by the Spanish Supreme Court on Thursday.
The ruling covered the five years between 1989 and 1993 when it was deemed Sanchez-Vicario had been a resident of Spain rather than of Andorra as she had said. "It is clear the person never ceased to be a Spanish resident. Even though she said she had applied to be resident in another place, the other place had never told her it had been made effective," a court statement said. "She never effectively lived in Andorra and she never had the intention to live there either." The case had gone to the supreme court after the former tennis player appealed against a high court judgement in 2003.Sanchez-Vicario lifted four grand slam singles titles. She won the French Open in 1989, 1994 and 1998 and became the first Spanish woman to lift the US Open trophy in 1994. Bureau Report
