Oil minister has proposed to levy additional excise duty of Rs 1.70 lakh on small diesel cars, and Rs 2.55 lakh on medium and larger versions.
Increased use of diesel by cars means enhanced public health risks and greater revenue losses due to the under-priced and under-taxed fuel.
Some diesel cars are beating the over-hyped hybrids in terms of fuel efficiency.
In a bid to contain the pollution in the capital city the state government raised the VAT of diesel cars by upto 12.5 percent. The hike was proposed by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit in her State Budget speech Tuesday here.
