Air India flight hits airport building in Stockholm, aircraft wing damaged

It was an unpleasant experience for 179 passengers travelling onboard Air India flight AI 167 as the aircraft hit an airport terminal building in Stockholm. The flight from Delhi to the Swedish capital was grounded following the incident.

According to news agency ANI, the passengers were shifted to another carrier of Air India. One wing of the aircraft was damaged in the incident. The cockpit crew was taken off duty.

News agency PTI quoted an Air India official as saying that the Boeing 787-8 (Dreamliner) plane had arrived from New Delhi and was taxiing to the gate when the tip of the left wing of the plane struck against the wall.

The flight AI 167 had departed at 0239 hours from New Delhi and landed at Stockholm at 0530 hours (local time).

A report in The News International said that the accident occurred at a distance of about 50 metres from terminal 5 of Stockholm airport.

Last month, the wheels of a Boeing 737 plane operating Air India Express flight to Dubai from Trichy had hit the perimeter wall of the airport during the take off but continued for its destination for nearly four hours.

It was however, diverted to Mumbai after the Trichy airport officials reported the matter to pilots that the aircraft might have come in contact with the wall.
