New Delhi: Taking on constant brickbats from the Opposition, Congress President Sonia Gandhi said that if the party’s detractors didn’t spare their tall leaders like Indira Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, they wouldn’t stop at anything. Addressing an elections rally in Delhi, she said, “Opponents of Congress have been ridiculing our ministers since independence. Did they spare Indira ji? With Indira ji, our nation had its head held high internationally, but even she was attacked. When they (opposition) didn`t spare our freedom fighters, they wouldn`t spare us or Dr Manmohan Singh ji either.” Batting for a fourth term for Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Sonia said the development brought about by the Congress government was there for all to see. “I want to ask you if the shape of Delhi has changed or not since Sheila ji became the CM. Delhi has got a metro service that is famous the world over. And Delhi’s buses aren`t jam packed as earlier,” she said. The UPA chairperson also lauded Sheila’s steps towards empowerment of women and said, “Sheila ji has also taken many steps for empowerment of Delhi’s women. There is no need to contest what is visible to the eye — Delhi`s development is evident. But our opponents don`t want to see these.”
