Meerut: At least six people were injured and several vehicles damaged when a clash broke out between two communities in Lal Kurthi market area here, police said on Wednesday.
Members of the two communities started pelting stones at each other last night after a group of youths in an inebriated state allegedly passed derogatory remarks at the other community, police said.
Six people were injured during the clash, police said adding that several cars and a bike were also damaged.
Police had to use lathicharge to control the situation, they said.
Locals, however, claimed that the reason behind the clashes was not the derogatory remarks but due to an incident of harassment of two girls by the boys of another community.
Two girls were allegedly harassed by the boys from the other community. When the girls reported the incident to their parents, they got agitated which resulted into the clash, the locals said.
Due to the tension following the incident, the local police is on a strict vigilance in the area, police said.
The situation is now under control as the two communities reconciled this morning, they said.
