London: Renowned artist Maqbool Fida Husain was laid to rest at the Brooklyn cemetery, Woking in London on Friday despite an offer from the Indian government to bring his body back to India. As per reports, a prayer meeting took place in London which was followed by the burial. The proceedings were held in a private ceremony by his sons Owais, Mustafa and daughter Raiza away from media’s glare. Talking to a news channel about the funeral of legendary artist MF Husain in London, socialite Suhel Seth said that, “There were forty-fifty people present at the occasion. His son read the holy quotes. It was a moment of personal grief. It was a moment of reflection. It was not a state funeral but a private moment to celebrate the human being. He was an ordinary man with extraordinary virtue and that how he defined himself. He was man without borders.” Senior Editor N Ram, who also attended the funeral, said, “He was an incredible human being. Always an Indian at heart. It was sad that some unfortunate incidents took place at the end of his life. But he was never bitter about them….I will not name any individuals. He just couldn’t continue because the harassment was so great. It was a failure of the system which failed to protect the freedom of expression, his creativity and his genius. He longed to return to India.” The funeral was also attended by Indian female entrepreneur Shahnaz Husain. MF Husain, who was hailed as the ‘Picasso of India’ was forced to live in self-imposed exile due to death threats from Hindu radicals, died in London Thursday. He was 95. MF Husain breathed his last in a London hospital.
