Mumbai: Praising Angelina Jolie`s decision to go for double mastectomy to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer and having the courage to share it with the world, Indian filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar says that the Hollywood actress has become an inspiration for women the world over.
“I bow to the courage and strength that Angelina Jolie has shown by talking about breast cancer and encouraging the women world over to fight it,” tweeted the 46-year-old filmmaker, known for movies like ‘Dev D’ and two-part series ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’.
Jolie revealed that her mum died of breast cancer at the age of 56, and doctors told her she had an 87 percent chance of getting the disease herself.
In a first person account in the New York Times, Jolie, 37, said she had reconstructive surgery with implants, nine weeks after the operation at the start of February. She later said that on April 27, she finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved.
She added that her chances of getting the potentially deadly disease have dropped from 87 percent to just five percent.
Jolie said that she shared her experience with everyone so that other women can see what options are available to them.
