New Delhi: Actress Jiah Khan, who hanged herself to death late night June 3, was much impressed by the Philadelphia born cool, smart and pretty Gia Carangi, who made it big in the American modeling circuit.
At the age of 16, Khan (who was originally christened Nafisa), decided to rename herself Gia, after watching supermodel Gia Carangi’s biopic featuring Angelina Jolie. Incidentally, the film happens to be one of the landmark movies of Jolie’s career that got her a Golden Globe.
Although it was the sex appeal of the name that enamoured Jiah, little did she know that she would end up having the same tragic fate as her quasi-namesake.
Numerous similarities emerge between the supermodel Gia and Jiah Khan. Both entered the world of glitz and glam in their teens, went through painful heartbreaks and saw failing careers. And they ended up sharing the same end with a 26-year-old Gia Carangi succumbing to AIDS and a 25-year-old Jiah Khan submitting herself to the trials and tribulations of her personal and professional life.
Was it the name that proved ominous for the promising Jiah? Or is this pure coincidence? It is best to leave some questions unanswered.
