New Delhi: She started her film career as Apu`s young wife in Satyajit Ray`s film at the age of 14. Now at 66, Sharmila Tagore says she is busy doing things other than cinema.
The actress was recently seen in Shangeeta Datta`s `Life Goes On` with daughter Soha. Sharmila played a woman, who is mourned by her three daughters and her husband in the movie, a modern adaptation of Shakespeare`s `King Lear`.
At the moment Sharmila has not signed on anything new as she wants to do meaningful things that include her involvement with charities.
"I don`t have any movie at the moment. I am very busy doing lots of other things. I was recently in Washington participating in Kennedy centre talking about maternal death and children`s rights. So far I have been very busy and I intent to remain so but it has to be meaningful and give me pleasure," Sharmila told reporters.
Asked whether showbiz has become too youth-centric and Sharmila says it has always been.
"It has always been youth and beauty centric. Earlier, the lights stopped at 30 and now maybe it is stopping a little early. The target audience is young so naturally the industry will focus on them," says the actress.
Sharmila, who completed her tenure as Censor Board Chief, is happy with the career choice of Saif Ali Khan and Soha, who have followed their mother in the world of acting.
"I am very happy that they are working. Stardom does not affect me. It has never affected me in my career and I don`t look for stardom in thiers either. As long as they like with what they are doing. I will be happy," says Sharmila.
One of the things that attracted Sharmila to `Life Goes On` is her multi-layered character and the beautiful use of Rabindranath Tagore`s poems, which were translated in Hindi by Javed Akhtar.
"I think it is the best translation ever. The other translations are very academic and they try to be more poetic than Tagore whereas Javedji had no ego at all. He has just tried to get the essence of Tagore instead of the literal
translation," says Sharmila.
As far as working in more such movies is concerned, Sharmila is game for it.
"The role should have substance otherwise I don`t think culture has any boundaries," she adds.
