London: The next season of "Homeland" will be set in Berlin - and Mandy Patinkin has promised that Germany is "a major character in the piece".

The thriller's fourth season was also shot mostly outside of the US, though on that occasion Cape Town was doubling for other locations, reported Digital Spy.

"We're shooting in Berlin for the whole fifth season, and Berlin and its history and its environment is also a character in the show, whereas Cape Town actually doubled for Pakistan and for the US," Patinkin - who plays CIA director Saul Berenson - said.

"It's set two-and-a-half years later - and Germany is a major character in the piece. It obviously represents a place that has a history of conflict - of moral and ethical concern of a generation that's trying to recover from acts that their fathers and grandparents did, and the pain and suffering it caused.

"You can't fix what's broken - this idea that you can fix what's broken... You can't. Things get broken for a reason, and they're there as a reminder that they broke. That's the lesson - don't break it again."

Patinkin added that he hopes "Homeland" continues to traverse the globe in future seasons, tackling different cultures and histories.

The fifth season of "Homeland" will see Carrie (Claire Danes) working for a security firm in Berlin, with Miranda Otto joining the cast as the CIA's Berlin Chief of Station, who works under Patinkin's Saul.
