Ahmedabad: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani on Monday gave the credit of BJP's victory in Assembly elections to the people.

"I would like to give credit for this victory to the people of Gujarat, also give assurance that in the coming 5 years BJP will work towards what the people of the state want," he said.

After trailing for some time, Rupani finally secured a comfortable win from Rajkot West seat by 131586 votes.

Rupani was behind his Congress rival Indranil Rajguru in Rajkot West in the first hour. The Rajkot (West) is a prestigious seat as Prime Minister Narendra Modi contested from here as Gujarat CM in 2002. This seat has been with the BJP for over three decades. The seat is also known as the CM seat in the state.

Rupani defeated Congress' Jayantibhai Kalaria by a margin of 23, 740 votes. Largest constituency in the Saurashtra region, this seat is totally dominated by urban voters.

Meanwhile, PM Modi said that election results in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh indicated a strong support for politics of good governance and development,

"I bow to the people of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh for their affection and trust in BJP. I assure them that we will leave no stone unturned in furthering the development journey of these states and serve the people tirelessly," he tweeted.

He also said the results proved that there is a strong support for "politics of good governance and development".

"I salute the hardworking BJP karyakartas (workers) in these states for their hard work which has led to these impressive victories," the PM said.

In another tweet in Hindi, he said development won and so did Gujarat.

The BJP on Monday secured a record sixth straight victory in Gujarat and evicted the Congress in Himachal Pradesh.

BJP workers burst crackers and distributed sweets at the party's state headquarters in the national capital to celebrate its victory in Gujarat and Himachal.
