New Delhi: Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim on Monday has been sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a special CBI court for a 2002 rape case.

The judgement came after CBI judge Jagdeep Singh flew to Rohtak's Sunaria jail to pronounce the quantum of sentence.

Following the judgement, Ram Rahim - Qaidi number (prisoner number) 1997 was taken away for examination.

This is how people reacted to the development:

Anshul Chhatrapati, son of slain journalist Ram Chandra Chhatrapati, who exposed Dera said, 'Satisfactory; been saying since long Ram Rahim Singh is an enemy of our society, said Anshul Chhatrapati, son of the slain journalist who exposed Dera. People did not agree when we said Ram Rahim Singh is involved in objectionable activities. Happy court proved it today.'

Baba Ramdev said, 'Court has set an example that no one can escape the law.'

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said: 'This sentence must be accepted by the people and peace must prevail.'

BSP chief Mayawati said, 'Had there been any honesty and truth in what the prime minister stated in his 'Mann ki Baat' yesterday, the Manohar Lal Khattar government would have been dismissed by now after the stern view taken by the Punjab and Haryana High Court.'
