New Delhi: Do you like your coffee black? Chances are you may be a psychopath, a study has said.

According to the study published in the journal Appetite, people who preferred black coffee had sadistic or psychopathic tendencies.

The study surveyed more than 1,000 adults and their coffee preferences and incorporated four different Machiavellian personality traits and included psychopathy, aggression, sadism and narcissism.

It was found that black coffee lovers, who also had a preference for other bitter foods as well, possessed psychopathic and sadistic personality traits.

For people with sadistic traits, the consumption of bitter foods was comparable to a rollercoaster ride, where they enjoyed things that induced fear.

On the other hand, the study said that those who like their coffee with milk and sugar, are more likely to have an agreeable temperament. The study found that people with this preference were more sympathetic, kind and cooperative.

As per a leading daily, the reason why black coffee is associated to one’s personality traits is not clear. The researchers said that ‘bitter’ is a subjective term and the scope of the study may be limited.

Moreover, one’s taste preferences may or may not have do anything with one’s personality as it can also be because of one’s culture and family.

But, there's still an upside for those who can't live without black coffee – it turns out that they may be more health conscious than others. This is because espresso has many health benefits without the added calories.
