LeT claims responsibility for Karan Nagar attack in J&K

Srinagar: Lashkar-e-Taiba on Monday claimed responsibility for Karan Nagar terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, ANI reported.

A paramilitary trooper was killed after a failed terror bid on a CRPF camp in Srinagar. The trooper was wounded in the shootout as the security forces prepared for a final assault against the holed-up terrorists, a police officer said, as per IANS.

He was shifted to the nearby SMHS hospital, barely 300 metres away from the site of the gunfight, and died later.

Kashmir police chief SP Vaid in a tweet said, "I congratulate alert CRPF sentry for averting suicidal attack in Karan Nagar."

Earlier around 4.30 am on Monday, two terrorists were spotted by an alert sentry at the observation post of 23rd battalion of the CRPF in Karan Nagar area. 

The two were forced to flee as the alert sentry fired at them.

Searches in the area revealed that terrorists carrying backpacks and AK-47 rifles had taken shelter in a building near the CRPF camp, which was then surrounded.

After the hiding militants were challenged, they fired at the security forces triggering a gunfight.  The latest attack on the Army camp took place nearly 15 months after the Jammu region was hit by a similar attack.

Meanwhile, three terrorists involved in the Sunjwan camp attack were killed in the retaliatory action by the Army inside the camp and a large quantity of arms and ammunition was seized from them.

The last terror attack in the Jammu region had taken place on November 29, 2016, when terrorists had stormed the Army's Nagrota camp on the outskirts of Jammu city, killing seven Army personnel including two officers.
