New York: On Day 3 of his US visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the United Nations General Assembly and met several world leaders on the sidelines of the UNGA Summit. Here are the live updates:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to host leaders of the G4 nations for a special summit in New York ahead of leaving for the Silicon Valley leg of his US visit. As per officials, PM Modi will attend the G4 Summit with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese PM Shinzo Abe and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff. All four G4 nations back each others' bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

"With President of Sri Lanka, there was a discussion on the reconciliation process and the President said that he expected this to move forward now. During the course of the day, PM Modi is scheduled to hold several important bilateral meetings, including with the Prime Minister of Bhutan Tshering Tobgay, the President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena, the Prime Minister of Sweden Stefan Lofven, and the President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with the Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Friday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly sessions in New York. He also held a meeting with King Abdullah of Jordan and had a pull aside with Kenny Davis Anthony, Prime Minister of St Lucia.
Amid India's strong bid for a permanent seat in UN Security Council, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday pitched for reform of the powerful world body to make it "broad-based", saying it is essential to maintain its credibility and legitimacy in the current world realities.
Addressing the UN General Assembly soon after it adopted the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030, he also underlined the need for ensuring "climate justice" while pursuing these targets so as to ensure protection to the poor.
"70 years back, when the horrific second World War came to an end, this organisation came into being, raising hopes of people around the world. We have gathered here to decide a new direction," he told the gathering of world leaders.
"We must reform the UN and the Security Council. This is essential so that the institutions have greater credibility and legitimacy. With a broad-based representation, we will be more effective in achieving our goals," Modi said.
His pitch for making the UNSC broad-based comes amidst India's strong bid for a permanent seat in the expanded five-member world body.
