Mumbai rains: BEST operates 100 extra buses to ferry stranded commuters

Yesterday, nearly 300 mm rain in 12 hours paralysed the maximum city. Religious places, municipal schools, railway stations, offices and corporate parks turned into temporary homes for people who were stranded.

Mumbai: As Mumbai prepare itself to brace more floods, high tides and water-logging due to continous downpour in the city, civic body's transport wing has supplied over 100 extra buses to ferry stranded commuters at various places. 

BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade told PTI, "We ran 109 extra buses on important routes yesterday and today too, we are running additional buses on the Colaba-Thane route."

The suburban train network, which carries over 65 lakh passengers a day, is the lifeline of the financial capital. BEST provides support to the transport network with a fleet of nearly 4,000 buses.

Meanwhile, the train services on all the three lines remain uncertain with fresh downpour. 

Earlier today, the Railways restored rail services on all the lines - Central, Western and Harbour. However, as per latest report, services were disrupted again on two lines after the city was pounded with fresh rains in the afternoon today.
