'Electric cars cause more pollution than petrol ones'

`Electric cars cause more pollution than petrol ones` London: Though electric cars are heralded as an environment friendly solution in major cities, a study says their pollution levels are worse than petrol-powered vehicles.

A study on pollution in 34 Chinese cities found that electricity generated by power stations to drive electric vehicles leads to more fine particle emissions than petrol-powered cars.

Researchers Chris Cherry and Shuguang Ji analysed the emissions and environmental health impacts of five vehicle technologies.

They found that the electricity generated to power electric cars caused more particulate matter pollution than that caused by an equivalent number of petrol-driven vehicles.

Particulate matter comes from the combustion of fossil fuels, and includes acids, organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles.

Cherry and his team focused on China because of the popularity of electric vehicles. E-cars and e-bikes in the country now reportedly outnumber conventional vehicles two to one.

In China, 85 percent of electricity production is from fossil fuels, and about 90 percent of that is from coal.

In terms of air pollution, they found electric cars were more harmful to public health.

The researchers used five vehicle types -- petrol and diesel cars, diesel buses, e-bikes and e-cars. They then calculated the proportion of emissions inhaled by the population.

The report, however, did not mention which organisation Cherry and his team were affiliated to.

You`ll need more info on this survey before pitting a title like that on it. If we had a penny for every ``survey`` that show electric cars pollute more than gasoline ones, we`d be righ. All serious studies show otherwise, from the US Deptament of Energy to Universities. Lastly, China doesn`t have the most technologically advanced power stations and their pollution emission standards are very loose. But in the meantime, articles as such drive traffic to sites...

What I find amazing is that nearly every comment on there discounted the findings as basically politically motivated. No one actually took into accounts facts. If the facts are correct then the results are correct regardless of who paid for the study. This is the problem with the anthropogenic global warming alarmists is that any scientific fact that controverts their hardcore faith that man is the cause of climate change though it is clearly documented there has been no warming in over a decade. They will immediately go to destroy the reputation of the source instead of embracing the science and moving forward. It has long been known that the mass production of the batteries for electric/hybrid vehicles cause more pollutants from production to disposal than combustion engine vehicles. But because this does not further your agenda you will discount this fact and continue spreading inaccurate data as accurate even though it has been brought into serious question as to its veracity. Of course this post will be and I will be lambasted and name called because that is all the envioronmentalists know how to deal with anyone who disagrees with them.

Battery electric vehicles also produce more greenhouse gases in most parts of the US since most of our electricity is made by burning fossil fuels. A detailed regional analysis of GHGs shows that battery EVs, on the average over the entire US, produces 7.4% more GHGs than a gasoline hybrid, and plug-in hyrids generate, on the average 10% more greenhouse gases than a gasoline hybrid.

This means we need to invest in making clean energy by via solar power, wind power, creating new nuclear power plants (that are safe) and other forms of alternative energy that are less polluting than coal. China could have done this already if they had wanted to but they stand to make more money letting things continue the way they are now. The powerful are the ones making easy money off the coal and are probably the ones that paid for this ``news article`` with said money.

We`re talking about coal plants in China, here. China is not exactly the paragon of environmental responsibility (and I will allow them that, since they are just ramping up to first world status). Electric can be cleaner if the power is generated from cleaner plants - that`s the beauty of it. Even if this wasn`t the case, oil`s going to run out eventually folks. There`s never going to be an infinite supply of anything on a finite planet. Ram that through your thick head.

China is not only one of the most heavily dependent users of coal, they also have some of the worst emissions. Why did the author of this article take the worst example on this planet? Where I live electricity comes from wind and hydro. Shouldn`t this be a regional issue?

It`s a case of dumb leading dumber! ``Expert`` scientists are the ones screwing up the planet! Look what they did with bees!

Another example where data can be manipulated to back anything. Basically this article states electric cars are not good for the environment or at least in China. Other countries are not do heavily invested in fossil fuel energy so electrics would be beneficial.
