New Delhi: Washing our face is one of the first things that we do whenever we come back from outside. Getting rid of the excess dirt, grime, sweat, oil and dust makes our skin feel fresh.

In fact, we're sure that most of you out there make it a point to wash your face at least twice or thrice a day. Then there are those who think it's safe to wash their face five times a day “to avoid skin problems”.

But were you aware that washing your face too much is in fact, destroying your skin?

This is because, every time your skin is exposed to cleansers and water, it strips off the natural hydrating oils from your skin along with the grime. A parched skin will not only look dull but is also prone to wrinkles and fine lines.

This gives rise to the question, how much is too much?

According to dermatologists, you should not wash your face more than twice a day. Once in the morning after you wake up and the second time in the evening or at night before bed.

If you have oily skin, then take a blotting paper and dab it on your face, especially on your T-zone and the sides of your nose, to absorb the grease. This won't even dry out your skin. Another way to get rid of greasy skin without using water is taking a cotton swab soaked in toner and dabbing it on your face.

Meanwhile, when you do decide to wash your face, make sure you follow these tips:

1. Ensure that you use a gentle, non-foaming cleanser to wash your face. Buy one that suits your skin-type.

2. Wash your face with lukewarm water as hot water can eliminate the natural oils from your skin.

3. Don't scrub your face too much while using face wash. Over-exfoliating your skin will do more harm than good.
