Srinagar: Police on Monday arrested Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) chairman Mohammad Yasin Malik while he was leading a protest march at Maisuma in Srinagar.
Malik was about to proceed to Lal Chowk with the protesters, but his attempt was foiled by the police.
The protest was under the banner of `Quit Kashmir Movement` against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) who were to declare lakhs of Non-Kashmiri refugees as the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir.
JKLF activist Ashraf Ahmed said here today, "This protest was in the favour of Kashmiriat, against BJP and RSS` idea of declaring non Kashmiris as the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. The protest will continue and is happening at many places. A group had already been arrested in Pulwama."
Malik had appealed to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir to observe June 23 as a day of total shut down and re start the Quit Kashmir Movement.
Earlier today, separatists had called for a complete shutdown in Kashmir over the alleged conspiracy by the BJP and the RSS to settle non-state subject refugees to change the demography of the state.
All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and government offices will remain shut and public transport will be off the roads.
