Pune: A local court here on Monday convicted Mirza Himayat Baig, for his role in the bomb blast at the city`s German Bakery in February 2010.
According to reports, Baig was found guilty of hatching the conspiracy and plotting the bomb at Pune`s German Bakery in 2010.
Hearing on the quantum of sentence for the convict will be held on April 18.
At least 17 people were killed and 64 others were seriously injured in the powerful blast at the bakery in Koregaon Park on February 13, 2010.
The investigators later arrested Mirza Himayat Baig, from Udgir in Maharashtra. Baig, the only suspect in the case, was arrested in Pune on September 7, 2010.
He was arrested after the investigators found 1,200 kg of explosives from his home in Udgir in Latur district.
Others who have been named in the case are Mohsin Choudhary, Yasin Bhatkal, Riyaz Bhatkal, Iqbal Bhatkal and Faiyaz Kagzi. All of these five suspects are still absconding.
The prosecution told the court the German bakery blast conspiracy was hatched at a meeting in Colombo in 2008, where Baig was trained to make a bomb. He assembled the bomb at his cyber cafe in Udgir.
However, Baig’s counsel claimed that he was not in Pune at the time of the blast.
The German Bakery was popular refreshment centre in Pune frequented by locals and foreigners.
